Cologne Cathedral edit

A UNESCO World Heritage site. It took over 630 years to complete this monumental cathedral. In 1880 the cathedral was finally consecrated. Cologne's '''Dom''' is the first sight you will notice when taking the main exit from the central station. (If you don't see it, you've taken the back exit.) If you are in good shape, take the 509 stairs to the top of the south tower. It takes about an hour, so wear comfortable shoes, but it's worth the hike. Touring the Cathedral is forbidden during Mass.

  • incredible imposing place that dominates and defines Cologne both physically and historically. the English tour is excellent, well worth the fee.

  • Beautiful example of a gothic cathedral; enormous, ostentatious, and attracts relatively low crowds so you can explore the artwork at your own pace.

  • This is the only thing I saw in Cologne, as I was only there to switch trains. Fortunately, this gorgeous Gothic cathedral is right next to the station so please try to visit it if you have a layover (in my case, I was going from Frankfurt to Amsterdam).

  • This is an amazing building and it's fun to watch first time visitors to Cologne step outside the central station just to find themselves dwarfed by this gigantic cathedral. Next you'll see them wander around, kneeling or lying down, leaning & stepping back...in an attempt to capture the entire Dom AND their travel buddy with their little digital cameras...good luck - it's worth the effort!

  • the 533 steps in the right tower were worth the climb: 1 what a spectacular view and 2 awesome to think that every stone, every detail is made by hand! the amount of detail and vision into structural engineering is beyond comprehension. there must be a lot of hidden knowledge inside the design!
