Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

AKA Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe

Unveiled in 2005, Berlin's Holocaust Memorial is a sea of over 2,700 towering concrete slabs varying in height and width, set upon uneven ground. A maze of gray and sunlight, the labyrinth is meant to provoke feelings of disorientation that mimic how the Nazis lost touch with human reason, but the abstract memorial has proven controversial. With no plaque or symbols, some feel that the memorial does not go far enough. In any case, this provocative memorial is well worth a visit.

  • The exterior memorial of uneven gray blocks and pathways appears to be sterile, somber and monochrome, but is strangely cheerful upon first encounter. People were chasing each other and enjoying hopping from block to block or playing hide and seek in the maze. The interior memorial museum is located underground in an almost hidden location, as if alluding to both the German's approach of hiding the murders from its own population and the world and to the shame Germany still holds onto today over this hateful oart of their history. The detailed and graphic-heavy account of the rise of the third-reich, the initial persecution and eventual genocide of 6 million Jews and other unwanted people is devastating to encounter. despite being rather full of visitors, it was absolutely silent as people concentrated on reading each factual, brutal panel. After returning above ground, the gray blocks of varying height no longer felt playful, but became reminiscent of train cars indiscriminately carrying Jews to their deaths.Allow yourself some recovery time after encountering this memorial.
