Phnom Penh

Cambodia's Up and Coming Capital

There is no place better to reflect on both Cambodia's dark past and bright future than the country's capital city of Phnom Penh. A bustling center of government and commerce as well as a transportation hub, the city streets are clogged with noisy motorbikes that dart between French colonial buildings, bustling markets, and ancient Buddhist temples. Most travelers stay in either the large international hotels in the center or the budget guesthouses on Boeng Kak Lake. Spend a few days exploring the city's significant historical sites. Once the place of horrid scenes provoked by the Khmer Rouge, Choeung Ek (the Killing Fields) and the Museum of Genocide have now become popular tourist attractions. All is not gruesome though: the jewel-laden Silver Pagoda and the nearby Royal Palace, a fine example of classical Khmer architecture, are worth a look, as is the National Museum, home to the most important art and Khmer and Buddhist relics from around the country, at least those not plundered or destroyed during the civil war that saw the city completely vacated in the late 1970s.
