Musée du Louvre

The building complex of the Louvre was originally a royal palace, today it stands for the museum that resides there -- the most visited and probably the most famous in the world. Anyone who enters at the main entrance under the glass pyramid (which was added to the courtyard in 1989) must choose between two strategies: Either you use the express method of cherry-picking out most famous items in the Louvre collection, above all da Vinci's lovely Mona Lisa, smiling behind thick bulletproof glass in the Denon wing (don't be disappointed: the most famous lady in art history is small and inaccessible, mostly because of the throng of camera-toting tourists). Or you take a half-day, or even better a full day, to explore the many treasures of the collection. In three wings and four levels, the collection includes art from all eras, from ancient Egypt through the Middle Ages up to the magnificent painting and sculpture collections. For a plan of the museum, consult the information desk.

  • A must see whether you are 'art lover' or not.For young parents with kids go to the 'Assistance' area as soon as you enter the lobby near information desk to get a free stroller by rendering your passport. To get the Nintendo Auidio Guides remember to first get a ticket at the main entrance and then proceed to the issuing counters located at all 3 wings.

  • Majestic and expansive, the Louvre is a must-see while you're in Paris. The beautiful grounds and massive collection help make up for the crowds surrounding the rather tiny Mona Lisa. Lounge near the brilliantly-designed outdoor fountains and feel like a piece of art yourself.

  • This museum takes days to complete, and is known for making people faint. Highlights include the roman statues, and most people make a point of seeing the Mona Lisa during their stay.

To skip the queue buy a ticket online and collect it at one of the many shops (one is also close to the Louvre). Get in in the morning and go immediately to see Monna Lisa … after it will be too crowed.

Long waiting lines. I recommend to go there during lunch or in the afternoon. It's a huge art collection and it is high recommended to see the Napoleon's rooms with frescos on the ceilings and overdecorated with a part of Egyptian art.

  • Absolutely fantastic. Marvelous beauty and history engulf you from every angle each step you take. Don't know if a wash of the obviously dusty statues and windows will help improve the visual appeal. Now with the dust and dirt, everything looks significantly historical, old and unkempt. Some just unkempt and neglected- like the many dirty windows...

Suggested also the night visit. The 4 lightened pyramids are very beautiful. The place is very suggestive. Around 24.00 the access is closed.

  • Take 2 or 3 days to REALLY explore the Louvre! Try to run away from big groups to enjoy the art in peace.

Very subtle and elegant, and it's great how tradition and modernity were combined in this museum!
