Sir Walter Scott Monument

One of Edinburgh's iconic landmarks

Standing just across the North Bridge near Waverly railway station, the Scott Monument is a 200 ft. Gothic spire that rises dramatically above the Marks & Spencer, House of Fraser, and other stores around it to dominate the New Town skyline. It was built as a monument to Scotland's favorite son, Sir Walter Scott, but these days is more famous for its notoriously black color - a result of soot and other pollution from Victorian-era Edinburgh. Visitors willing to climb the 287 to the top are rewarded with stunning views of the city, as well as Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat, and other well-known sites.
