The embodiment of a medieval city.

Siena is the embodiment of a medieval city. Its inhabitants pursued their rivalry with Florence right into the area of urban planning. Throughout the centuries, they preserved their city's Gothic appearance, acquired between the 12th and 15th centuries. During this period the work of Duccio, the Lorenzetti brothers and Simone Martini was to influence the course of Italian and, more broadly, European art. The whole city of Siena, built around the Piazza del Campo, was devised as a work of art that blends into the surroundings.

  • Well worth a day trip from Florence. The trains run every hour or so and the trip takes about 90 minutes. Be aware that the train station is a couple of kilometres from the old town centre. If you’re short of time, or don’t feel very energetic, the 7 Euro cab ride is a good investment, to get you to the spectacular central piazza and the charming little avenues which radiate from it.

  • Siena is small beautiful town that is using relegated to be a side day trip when visiting Florence. That would be a huge mistake. Stay a few days and explore the beautiful small streets and famous monuments.
