While the places between Grand Harbor in the south and St. George's Bay in the north still have different names, they have in fact long since grown into one big conurbation. Valletta is not only the historical center of the island, with the most attractions, but also a lively shopping area during the day. There are a lot of government offices there, but not many hotels. Floriana - like Valletta dominated by offices and government departments - embodies the transition to the residences of merchants and government employees. At first, small businesses still prevail in the northern neighborhoods, but from Sliema onwards, the focus is squarely on tourism. And at least near the coast, St. Julian's and Paceville are tourist strongholds.

Behind the neighborhoods near the water lies a second set of locations which are also part of urban Malta, among them Zabbar and Qormi, Hamrun and Birkirkara. They do not have much to offer tourists - unlike Paola and Tarxien with their major religious...
