Yonghe Temple

A temple dedicated to the Yellow Hat Sect of Lamaism

Though this is technically a Tibetan Buddhist temple, the Lama Temple is government-sponsored - Panchen Lama, chosen by the Chinese government after the Dalai Lama's chose for his successor "disappeared," was sworn in here, and the temple's very existence "proves" that China is tolerant of minority religions. But state-approved or not, no one can deny that there are more and more Chinese devotees to Tibetan Buddhism every year, and the Lama Temple is where they go.

The complex of buildings here is pretty, featuring golden-tiled roofs and 17th century architecture. The Hall of the Wheel of the Law is notable for its 20 ft. bronze statue of Tsongkapa, while the Tower of Ten Thousand Happinesses is home to a 60 ft. tall state of Maitreya, the future Buddha, a gift from the seventh Dalai Lama.

  • Good atmosphere, nice temple. But in comparison to other temples in China I have visited, it is just one of many. Nothing exceptional but still worth visiting
