Mahakan Fort

One of two surviving city forts

King Rama I had originally ordered a wall and 14 forts to be built around medieval Bangkok, during a time when the city was still protected by moats. However, not much remains today - Mahakan Fort is a white-washed, octagonal reminder of the past, standing squat next to a stretch of old city wall that now encloses a picturesque park. Behind the fort is an interesting slice of relatively recent Thai history - though some have been demolished, there are still a few wooden houses left that attest to the struggle of this local community against the Thai government to stand their ground against urban renewal.
