  • Nizhny Novgorod, colloquially shortened as Nizhny, it is one of the largest city in Russia, it is an administrative center of Nizhegorodskaya oblast and Volga Federal District of Russia. From 1932 till 1990 the city name was Gorky in honor of Russian Soviet writer Maxim Gorky. Nizhny Novgorod city is an important economical, transport and cultural center of Russia. Nizhny Novogorod is divided by the Oka River into two distinct parts. The Upper City (Nagornaya Chast) is located on the hilly eastern (right) bank of the Oka. The Lower City ( Zarechnaya Chast) occupies the low (western) side of the Oka, and includes five city districts. All of the today's lower city was annexed to Nizhny Novgorod in 1929–1931 Walking through the city you'll find a lot of ancient buildings of different years, beautiful modern architecture ideas, countless number of churches and cathedrals. Besides that there is a great number of museums and galleries, theatres, concert halls, libraries, movie theatres, parks, and other places. There are about six hundred unique historic, architectural and cultural monuments in Nizhny Novgorod city. UNESCO included Nizhny Novgorod in the list of 100 cities of the world which are of great historical and cultural value. The main feature of Nizhny Novgorod architecture is huge red-brick Kremlin. The Kremlin system includes 13 towers. It was a fortress, now - inside the Kremlin walls there are the city authorities, the region governor administration, ministeries, the memorials, religion sights, Art Gallery, Eternal Flame, Military exhibition and other. Chkalov Staircase connect Lower Volga river embankment to the main city square, it is a beautiful architectural idea, from this staircase come the best views towards the junction of the Oka and the Volga There are a lot of other places of interest, you can write me for more detailed information.
