Canal Street

Chinatown's main artery

Named for an actual canal that was built in the 1800's to empty a disease-ridden pond into the Hudson River, Canal Street and the area around it were once known for blocks of tenement housing and the poor, newly-arrived immigrants who lived in them. These days, it is the heart of the largest Chinatown outside China, a noisy, chaotic street with never-ending traffic and all the designer knock-offs and pirated DVD's you could ever want. Cheap food is as prevalent as fake Gucci, but Chinatown's famous fish markets and groceries are all here if you feel like cooking at home.

  • Chinatown's main thoroughfare. Try to time your trips for the week; crossing Canal Street on a weekend is sheer misery.
