Galata Bridge

Galata Bridge is the subject of much literature, poetry and history. It is the symbolic link between the traditional city of Istanbul proper, site of the imperial palace and principal religious and secular institutions of the empire, and the districts of Galata, Beyoğlu, Şişli and Harbiye where a large proportion of the inhabitants were non-Muslims and where foreign merchants and diplomats lived and worked. The bridge that currently stands here is the 5th bridge at this site, the earliest one dating back to the 6th century. Today, this bridge is a popular and crowded place that attracts tourists and locals. Fishermen have their fixed spots and the fresh catch makes for a delicious snack by the Bosporus.
