Picturesque, Friendly and Welcoming

This land of Vikings and Hans Christian Andersen serves as a natural stop on a backpackers’ route from western Europe into Scandinavia and the Baltics. Denmark is a member of the European Union but still maintains its own currency, so remember that those delicious beers may not be as cheap as they seem to be. Flying into the country is easy but leaves out the country's dramatic geography, far better taken in on a train or ferry. However you decide to come, Denmark is extremely clean (even by northern European standards), and foreigners will discover a rich world full of history and culture within its compact borders. Founded as a 12th-century trading port, Copenhagen, the capital, has survived Swedish armies and Nazi occupation to become one of the world’s most desirable cities to live in. Walking and biking are more popular than cars for getting around here, and the lengthy Stroget thoroughfare offers many entertainment and dining options to top off your evening stroll.
