Luzon is the largest island of the Philippines and can be found in the northernmost part of the archipelago. To the west of Luzon you can find the South China Sea, to the east the Philippine Sea and to the north the Babuyan channel as well as the Balintang Channel. With 104,688 square kilometers Luzon is the 17th largest island in the world. It’s also the world`s fifth most populated island with a population of 52,362,999 people in 2010. Next to the Visayas and Mindanao, it is one of the three primary island groups in the country which includes next to Luzon itself, also the Batanes and Babuyan groups of islands to the north, and the islands of Catanduanes, Marinduque, Masbate, Romblon, and Mindoro in the south. It is the economic and political center of the Philippines and 8 of the 17 administrative regions of the country belong to Luzon. It is home to the capital Manila where you can find the economic and financial center of the country in Makati City. Luzon is home of the third highest mountain of the country, the “Mount Pulag”, as well as volcanoes like “Taal Volcano” or “Mayon Volcano”. Also “Laguna de Bay” with 949 km² the largest lake of the country as well as the largest inland lake in South East Asia can be found here on Luzon. The main languages used on Luzon are Tagalog, Ilocano, Kapampangan, Bicol and Pangasinense. Of course English is also spoken by most of the people. No matter if you love big cities, great beaches, diving, rice terraces, caves or high mountains, Luzon has a lot to offer. Don’t miss out on that region.
