New Wealth, Ancient Ways and Sunny Shores

The U.A.E. is a federation of seven independent states, or emirates, where the offices of the president and prime minister are decided solely by heredity. Once you’ve gotten presents for everyone back home (The two most famous emirates are the glitzy shopping hubs of Dubai and Abu Dhabi), head inland for a little authentic culture. The desert can be brutally hot, of course, so it’s only logical to stop at Al Ain (“The Spring”), an ancient oasis that grew to become Abu Dhabi’s second-largest city. Visit the National Museum and see the photographic proof that, fifty years ago, there was only sand where all of those skyscrapers are. In the evenings, relax in the natural hot springs, enjoy an air-conditioned tent at the Green Mubazzarah, or bike the long road up Jabel Hafeet, the U.A.E’s highest mountain. Renting a car is pricey, but curious travelers can explore the “outer” emirates in a shared long-distance taxi. Remember: ladies up front – there are some gender specific rules one has to follow.
