  • Good article, well written. You have Puerto Varas to the north, Calbuco and the Island of Chiloe to the south, but on the peninsula between Puerto Montt and Calbuco is a rural, remote area that is accessible by busses that leave the Central Terminal (Pt. Montt) "por la costa, ruta interior." That takes you on the interior road from Cruce Cardenas to Putenio (means between the Tenio trees) and then links up with the highway to Calbuco. Like Huelmo, it is not very tourist-oriented, but that is the appeal. It is off the gringo trail, the road not taken. You'll also find the Tenio Natural Reserve/Reserva Natural de Tenios along the route and the bus drivers know where to drop off the backpackers, explorers, and the occasional tourist looking for a peaceful valley away from it all. In the area you’ll find Hospedaje Putenio, Cabanas Putenio, and a local owner who has his own microbrewery. During the summer you’ll find several fiesta costumbristas, similar to a local fair, as well as curantos de hoya and asados a palo con cordero. So instead of taking I-5 straight to Chiloe, or for that matter heading straight for Patagonia to the south, some travelers choose a more relaxed, rural visit to the interior of the peninsula, where it isn’t as tourist-oriented, but it is rural Southern Chile at its best!
