Culture, History, Football, and of course, that Famous Accent

Beatlemania may be past its heyday, but the British Invasion is far from over. With such a large presence in pop culture and everyday life, you might think you know everything there is to know about merry old England – bumbling gentlemen à la Hugh Grant, posh uptight royals, football hooligans. But a country seemingly full of caricatures is also rich with history, culture, and a lovely countryside that will surprise and enchant even the most devoted Anglophile. World-class culture is par for the course in England, with northern cities like Manchester and Sheffield emerging from their post-industrial past with a renaissance in arts and music that is giving behemoth London a run for its money. And of course, there are the historical sights worthy of postcards home to your mum – Stonehenge, Westminster Abbey, Warwick Castle, and so on, not to mention beautiful, ancient landscapes such as the Yorkshire Dales, the Cornish coast, and the Lake District. Perhaps the greatest part about England is that you are never more than a few hours away from all of these worlds, so a couple of weeks in the region will go a long way.

  • I was in London for a couple of weeks so I had time to visit all the tourist attractions. My worst memory is that being out at 2:00 a.m. I could not find a bus or a cab to take me to the Youth Hostel and not even a Queen's guard would talk to me ever after explaining my situation.
