For Budget-Minded Travelers

Kyoto has the reputation of being Japan’s most beautiful city, and you won't have to look far to figure out why. Beyond the steel and glass center, the palaces and pavilions of the capital of imperial Japan will enchant and enthrall you.

However, the first thing to focus on for your Kyoto budget vacation is finding accommodation. This could prove a little difficult as there is a limited number of low-budget hotels in this city. Your best deal would be to find a ryokan, a Japanese guest house where a family usually leases out beds to travelers in its home. These are usually very comfortable arrangements, although you should be prepared to pay the full price in advance.

Next on the agenda should be exploring old Kyoto. This isn't as difficult on a low budget as you might think. Admission is free to most of the sites, including the Imperial palaces, pavilions, Shogun palaces and the temples. The city also provides a ‘Kyoto Walks’ map to guide you through a lot of these sights. Available here:

If you are in Kyoto during April, you might be able to catch the traditional Cherry Blossom dances performed by aspiring Geishas. Kabuki can be seen throughout the year at Minami-za, where English translations are available through headphones.

For a low-budget meal, Okutan is the best option.

Round off your budget Kyoto trip by visiting the Ryoan-ji gardens. The gardens have been in Kyoto for about 600 years, are part of the Ryoan-ji temple, and exquisitely landscaped in traditional Japanese style.
